Tire Pressure - How Often Do You Check It?

Tire Pressure

You should check your Tire Pressure at least monthly, according to manufacturers. Having correct Tire Pressure gives you better fuel efficiency, and also maintains vehicle safety and stability. Tires complete the essential link between your vehicle's suspension and the road, and having under-inflated or over-inflated tires can compromise your car's stability, as well as its ability to corner and brake effectively.

If Tire Pressure is too high, less of the tire is touching the road. So instead of gripping the road, your tires will be bouncing off the road, leading to uneven tire wear, a bumpy ride, poor traction and longer stopping distances.

If Tire Pressure is too low, too much of the tire surface is touching the road. When this happens, tires wear out quickly, tread separation and overheating can occur, as well as damage to the wheels. Many cars have a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning light that comes on when the tire pressure is too low. When this "Tire Light" comes on, it means that one or more of your tires may be at least 25% below the factory recommended inflation pressure.

Regular Tire Pressure checks help to ensure that your tires stay in good condition. Some examples of things that affect Tire Pressure are seasonal changes in the air temperature or driving over sharp objects, such as a nail or piece of glass, where the loss of pressure may be gradual and hard to notice right away.
